International Danube Day 2026 was marked by our partners, DANUBEPARKS, with a variety of activities dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of the Danube River and its unique natural heritage.

In Croatia, the organisation collaborated with Kopački Rit Nature Park (Park prirode Kopački rit) to test the DANUBE4all River Walk Guide, demonstrating how every body can take an active contribute to environmental monitoring and nature conservation - regardless of your experience or education.

The guide invites citizens to explore river environments through a combination of observation, environmental monitoring, and hands-on learning, helping people better understand the ecological value of the Danube and its wetlands. You can read all about our unique River Walk Guide, developed in partnership with Drinkable River here!

Hands-On Water Quality Monitoring

Participants took part in a series of practical field activities, including water quality monitoring at Lake Sakadaš. They collected water samples and analysed them using the Drinkable Rivers methodology, measuring key indicators such as pH, electrical conductivity, nitrates, phosphates, and other parameters that provide valuable information about the condition of freshwater habitats.

Other way to contribute to nature conservation are by recording rare and protected specie, mapping invasive alien species, and exploring innovative environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling to detect the Danube Crested Newt (Triturus dobrogicus), or Danube Dragon, one of the river's flagship species

DANUBEPARK events were supported through the EURENI Programme of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUV) and the Danube WILDisland Regional Ramsar Initiative, helping local communities strengthen their connection with the river and its biodiversity.

We hope you had a fantastic Danube Day 2026 - whereever you were! 💙
