Born out of a 250-kilometre walk along the Danube in Romania in 2024 - where researchers, local communities, children, and river stewards came together along the way - the guide captures the simple but powerful truth that walking changes how we see things. Along the riverbank, conversations and encounters of all kinds happen naturally. Questions surface. Connections form. And perhaps a desire to protect, or even a shared sense of responsibility, can begin to grow.
Shaped by the work of river advocate Li An Phoa of Drinkable Rivers, who has walked over 20,000 kilometres along rivers worldwide, the guide takes you through everything you need to plan your own river walk - from setting your objectives and building your team, to mapping your route, engaging local partners, and following up after the walk. It includes templates, audio guidance, video clips, and real-world tips drawn from experience on the ground.
You don't need specialist training or expensive gear. You just need the river, some companions, and a willingness to look and listen.
